Motivation

In what ways can technology motivate students, especially with regard to literacy?

  1. Students love to use the computer and type! If they are able to reflect on what they've read they might be more interested in reading in order to use the technology when they are done! Some students also learn better when engaged with technology so this could enhance their learning as well.

  2. Technology can give students opportunities to express themselves in ways they wouldn't normally. Students who are shy to speak up during a classroom conversation on a book may be more motivated to write a blog about their observations. Students can also create a variety of projects using their interpretations such as posters or pamphlets. These types of activities can be much more motivating than writing a 5 page paper about what students have learned.

  3. I believe that technology can motivate students with literacy by letting them see that there are different methods of learning besides the good old books. We know that many students prefer to use visual aides then reading from a text every time. Therefore, technology does give an opportunity to motivate students by interacting with whatever program is out there and to give them the chance to learn more about technology in school as well as, at home. Overall, I know that in my classroom my students prefer to use the computer more because it gives them a tool to know what they are reading as a guidance then just following along the book an loosing their engagement.

  4. Technology in general is motivating to students becuase of the high interest rates students have in wanting to be on and using computers. Motivating students to use literacy skills can come naturally just by different sites that they go on, and programs that they use.

  5. I think technology is a great motivator because they see it as a fun way to do their work. They are still accomplishing the task at hand, but in a different way than regular paper and pencil. The students in my classroom still view the computers as a privilege and would love to use them more. They can be used as a reward to motivate student progress.

  6. Technology is a great motivator for students in order to get them to explore new topics, utilize various skills and critically analyze information. Technology provides an interactive opportunity for students to read, write (or type)as well as collaborate with others. Technology provides the initiative students need to learn new concepts and complete assignments, which represent their understandings of these concepts.

  7. Everyone's ideas are great! I agree with them all. You can also use the technology to give the children another way to read. Some children lover the computer and all it has to offer. It is possible in todays world to get the book on the computer, a itouch, iphone, or blackberry. This gives the children to read anytime and anywhere. As teachers we can also use the technology to show children how to navigate around library websites to find books. Since almost every library uses computers. We can have the children use the internet and for an assignment have them find a good scientific, historical website. and then have them find a bad/ unreliable website on a certain topic. That way they are able to distinguish between which ones are the right ones to use and which ones they should stay away from. I think that computers are great motivaters because children are used to computers. But children need to know that if they misbehave or "act up" their privleges can be taken away.
