In what ways can technology contribute to reading comprehension?

  1. Technology can contribute to reading comprehension for those students that prefer to have visual aides, then normal text. At the same time, it gives the opportunity for a student to be able to adapt and comprehend the usage of motor skills. Therefore, technology does contribute a lot to reading for any student but also more for those students that need the visual aide.

  2. Reading comprehension can be improved through the use of technology. Perhaps a student has trouble with fluency because of their limited vocabulary. In this case they could use a ReadingPen to help them define words to read more smoothly. Maybe a student has issues with sequencing and uses a program online to work on it. There are multiple ways in which a student can use a piece of technology to work on improving their comprehension skills.

  3. Technology can be great in helping a child with comprehension issues. If a child is struggling to understand the material because they have difficulty reading then the teacher can use a form of technology that the child can listen to what is being read, that way the child has a better chance to understand the information that they need to read. It can also be applied to directions for assinments so that the children can perform better at school and at homw with their work.

  4. Technology can help with comprehension skills due to the many resources such as the "quick pen" and computer programs, which read the words for the students. Students are able to follow along with the "reader," building their exposure to new vocabulary and words, which are hard to pronounce. Instead of students struggling over each individual word they are building their fluency, which overall improves comprehension.

  5. At our school we use technology to contribute to reading comprehension through our AR (accelerated reader) program. The students are assigned a reading level and able to choose any books at their level. After reading their book they are able to take a quiz on the computer based on the book they read. It is a great tool to assess if the students are comprehending what they are reading, or if they are only testing for points. There is a wide range of levels and quizzes through the program and can be used with any student.

  6. Technology can help assist reading comprehension by making graphic organizers, sequencing, or anything that provides that visual representation that will help students obtain comprehension. Also there are many different companies that provides leveled books and assessments to help students with comprehension as well!
