Digital divide

Technology resources varry greatly from poor schools and neighborhoods to wealthy schools and neighborhoods. How can we help students find technology resources that will help them achieve? How can we best prepare them to make optimum use of available resources?

  1. There are many issues that some economical status has a better technology than others but if there are ways that free technology or that every school district no matter how the economic status is could get the same program, every student will be able to succeed no matter where they live. At the same time, if educators can put more effort as well time to show students how to use those technology sources, we can make sure that every student will be able to use all the technology programs that are there for them to become successful.

  2. I think it is important to give students opportunities computers whenever possible. However not all schools have access to computers in there room. Teachers need to be in contact with those who control technology in their school such as the librarian or lab tech. We can also encourage our students to go to their public libraries which almost always have computers available. Lastly we can do grants to try and provide our students with beneficial technology.

  3. One thing I have learned from this class is the availability of grants. Schools can apply for grants to help them beat the digital divide. Also, it can be helpful to educate parents on technology use so that students can access it at home as well as in school. I just wish there was a way to provide the same resources to all students from all backgrounds. We are helpless to what is happening in their home life.

  4. I agree with Janine, there are many, many grants avaiable for schools and students relatin gthings with technology. Also getting PTA's involved is a great way to help raise money for technology things. Or finding the free things online such as starfall and bookflix for primary.

  5. I am often frustrated with my own school's lack of resources. There is one computer in my classroom and it is my own. When mentioning this issue to my administrators, they often respond that first graders don't need computers. I often encourage my students and their parents that if they do not have a computer at home to go to their local library to use computers. As teachers, we have to fight for grants to fund technology into schools, especially those with students from low-income households.

  6. Grants play a huge part in technology in schools. Many schools can afford it, but there are a lot of schools out there that can't even afford the basics for the children. Teachers can actually look into grants for the school and get it started that way, also teachers can encourge the children to use the computer at home if possible or the library. It might also be possible to download a program to the teacher's computer and during centers allow one group to share the computer to work on that program. It gets the children familiar with the technology. There is also the use of the school library and if possible seeing if the children can take special lessons in the library or with a computer class. If the middle schools or high schools have computer rooms maybe a teacher can arrange a field trip for the children to go use the computers, or see if it is possible to fit some time into their schedule where they can go over there like twice a week to use the computers. That would be a huge start for the children.
